Which cable does my device speak?
Victron gear talks over three main ports: VE.Direct (MPPTs, battery monitors), VE.Bus (inverter/chargers), and VE.Can (GX networks, managed batteries) — the latter two both use RJ45 cables. Check the port name on your device, match the cable, and remember VE.Can wants a terminator at each end.
What fuse goes where?
The fuse protects the wire, so rating follows cable size and the device's datasheet — MEGA fuses guard main battery feeds, MIDI fuses cover branch circuits. Match the fuse's voltage rating to your system too (32V vs 58V matters on 48V banks). Unsure? Send us your wiring plan.
Phone or laptop for setup?
Bluetooth dongles put Smart-less devices in the VictronConnect app — great for monitoring and everyday settings. The MK3-USB unlocks the deeper inverter/charger configuration from a laptop. Many owners want both: the dongle for daily glances, the MK3 for commissioning day.

VE.Direct, VE.Bus, VE.Can — which cable do I need?
Read the port label on your device. VE.Direct is the small flat connector on MPPTs and battery monitors. VE.Bus is the RJ45 network for inverter/chargers. VE.Can is the RJ45 network GX devices and managed batteries use — and it needs a 120 Ω terminator at each end of the chain. When in doubt, tell us the two devices you're connecting.
Can I use regular Ethernet cable for VE.Bus or VE.Can?
The connectors match, but we recommend proper UTP cables from the range here — correct pinout and quality straight from Victron, in lengths from 0.3 to 30 meters. On a boat, saving a few dollars on the nervous system of your power setup is rarely the win it looks like.
How do I pick a fuse size?
The fuse protects the wire, so it's sized to the cable and the device manufacturer's recommendation — every Victron datasheet lists one. Match the fuse voltage rating to your bank as well; a 32V fuse doesn't belong on a 48V system when a 58V version exists. We're happy to sanity-check your fusing plan.
What does the temperature sensor actually improve?
Charge voltage should shift with battery temperature — especially for lead-acid banks in engine rooms or cold lockers. The sensor feeds your charger or GX real numbers so charging compensates automatically. It's a twenty-dollar part that meaningfully extends battery life.
