Standard or Smart?
Both protect your bank the same way. The standard BatteryProtect is programmed with the button and display on the unit itself, while the Smart version adds Bluetooth so you can set disconnect levels and check status from your phone in VictronConnect. Many of our customers find the Smart version worth it for the easier setup alone.
Which amp rating?
Add up the loads that will run through it and choose the next size up — 65A, 100A or 220A. The 12/24V models detect your system voltage automatically, and a dedicated 48V 100A version covers higher-voltage banks. Standby draw is just 0.6mA, so it won't run down the bank it's protecting.
Do I need a Battery Balancer?
If your 24V or 48V bank is built from 12V batteries in series, small differences between batteries grow over time — one drifts high, another runs low, and the whole bank ages early. One balancer keeps a 24V pair equal; a 48V string of four uses three. An alarm output flags a battery that's drifting so you catch problems early.

What does a BatteryProtect actually do?
It's a low-voltage disconnect. Set a threshold, and when your battery sags to that voltage the BatteryProtect disconnects your loads before deep discharge does lasting damage — or before you lose the power to start your engine. Once the battery recovers, it reconnects automatically.
What's the difference between the standard and Smart BatteryProtect?
The protection is identical. The Smart version adds Bluetooth, so you program disconnect levels and check status in the VictronConnect app on your phone; the standard version is programmed with the button and display on the unit itself. Both come in 65A, 100A and 220A 12/24V models plus a 48V 100A version.
Can I charge the battery through a BatteryProtect?
No — it handles current in one direction only, from battery to loads, so chargers and other charge sources connect directly to the battery instead of through it. The upside of that simple one-way design: it draws just 0.6mA in standby.
Does BatteryProtect work with lithium batteries?
Yes — it includes a Li-ion mode designed to be switched by a compatible BMS through its remote on/off terminal, so the BMS can shed loads to protect the cells. Lithium setups vary, so tell us which battery and BMS you're running and we'll confirm the right configuration.
What does the Battery Balancer do, and how many do I need?
It equalizes the state of charge of two series-connected 12V batteries, so one battery doesn't drift high while its partner runs low — a common cause of early bank failure. A 24V bank needs one balancer, and a 48V string of four 12V batteries needs three. If the midpoint drifts too far, the alarm triggers so you catch a weak battery early.
