Z-brackets are the most popular mounting method for rigid-framed solar panels in marine and RV applications because they're simple, low-profile, and create a small air gap beneath the panel for ventilation. That airflow is important — solar panels lose efficiency as they heat up, and even a small gap between the panel and your mounting surface helps keep operating temperatures lower and energy output higher.

Installation Overview

Position the panel — place the solar panel face-down on a soft surface and attach one Z-bracket to each corner using the included bolts, nuts, and washers. The Z-shape should face outward, not inward.
Mark your mounting points — set the panel (with brackets attached) on your roof or mounting surface and mark where each bracket meets the surface.
Drill pilot holes — drill pilot holes at each marked point. If mounting on a fiberglass or metal surface (boat deck, RV roof), use the appropriate drill bit for the material.
Secure the brackets — fasten the brackets to the surface using the included self-tapping screws.
Seal the penetrations — apply a marine-grade sealant (such as Dicor or 3M 4200) over each screw hole to prevent water intrusion. This step is critical for any roof-mounted installation on a boat or RV.

Why Z-Brackets vs. Other Mounting Methods

There are several ways to mount a solar panel, and each has trade-offs. Here's how Z-brackets compare:

Z-Brackets (this kit) — the go-to for most flat-mount installations. Simple, inexpensive, low-profile, and provide ventilation. Ideal for permanent or semi-permanent installations on boat cabin tops, RV roofs, and shed roofs.

Tilt mounts — angle the panel toward the sun for higher output in winter or at higher latitudes. Better energy yield but taller profile and higher wind load. Not ideal for boats or vehicles that are underway.

Adhesive mounting — used for flexible panels that have no frame. Zero-profile but no ventilation gap, which means more heat buildup and slightly lower output in hot conditions.

Do I need one kit per panel or can one kit mount two panels?
