How to choose, in three questions
Amps, ingress protection, and smart-vs-analog — answer these and you'll know what to buy.
How many charging amps?
Match the charger to your bank and how fast you want a full recharge. A common rule of thumb is roughly 10–20% of the bank's amp-hours: a 200Ah bank is happy on a 20–40A charger, while a big house bank may want 50A or more. Bigger isn't always better — some batteries cap their charge rate.
Where will it live — dry, splashed, or soaked?
That sets the IP rating. IP22 is for a dry, protected locker; IP65 shrugs off spray and is the popular all-rounder; IP67 is fully sealed for exposed or below-deck-wet spots. The Skylla line covers pro splashproof and high-output duty.
Smart or analog — and what chemistry?
The Blue Smart and Phoenix Smart chargers add Bluetooth setup, lithium profiles, and storage modes — ideal for LiFePO4 and modern banks. The Centaur is a tough analog charger built for lead-acid and AGM where you just want reliable amps. Always set the profile your battery calls for.

Battery charger FAQ
What charger amperage do I need?
Size it to your bank. A common starting point is 10–20% of the bank's amp-hours — so a 100Ah bank suits a 10–20A charger and a 400Ah bank a 40–80A one. Bigger charges faster but check your battery's maximum charge current, since some lithium and AGM packs set a ceiling.
Which IP rating — IP22, IP65, or IP67?
IP22 is for a dry, protected space; IP65 resists spray and dust and is the popular all-rounder; IP67 is fully sealed and can take a soaking or a wet bilge. Pick for where the charger actually mounts, not where you wish it could.
Will these chargers work with lithium (LiFePO4)?
The Blue Smart and Phoenix Smart chargers have selectable lithium profiles and pair with VictronConnect over Bluetooth, so they're a clean match for LiFePO4. The analog Centaur is aimed at lead-acid and AGM. Whatever you choose, set the profile the battery maker specifies.
Smart (Bluetooth) or analog — does it matter?
Smart chargers let you set the chemistry, see charge state, and enable storage/maintenance modes from your phone, and they update charging logic over time. Analog chargers like the Centaur just deliver reliable amps with no app — great for straightforward lead-acid banks.
Can I leave the charger connected all the time?
Yes — these are multi-stage chargers that drop to a float or storage mode once the bank is full, so they're designed to stay connected at the dock or in storage without overcharging. The smart models have a dedicated storage mode for long layups.
Charger, inverter/charger, or DC-DC — which do I need?
A standalone charger tops up your bank from shore power. If you also want AC output from the battery in one box, see inverter/chargers. To charge one battery from your engine's alternator or another battery while underway, you want a DC-DC charger.
120V only, or 120–240V?
The Blue Smart chargers run on 120V (North America). The Phoenix Smart IP43 and the Skylla chargers accept 120–240V, which is handy for boats that travel or plug into different shore standards.
