Is a pod right for my boat?

Pods shine on sailboats and displacement hulls: the motor sits below the waterline, steering stays clean, and the saloon doesn't give up space to an engine. If you'd rather keep the hull unpierced, an outboard may be the simpler path — we'll talk it through honestly.

How much power?

Displacement hulls need less than you'd think — the 1–3 kW pods move daysailers and small keelboats well, 6 kW suits heavier cruisers, and the 12–20 kW pods handle boats that used to run substantial diesels. Boat specs in, honest sizing out: that's a five-minute call.

Which ecosystem?

Think in systems, not just motors. ePropulsion's Evo pods run 48V with hydrogeneration under sail; the eSSA pods share the 96V G-Series platform with the X- and I-Series; Torqeedo's Cruise FP line integrates through TorqLink. Your battery, display, and charging choices follow the ecosystem.

Pod drive FAQ

What kind of boats suit a pod drive?

Sailboats, launches, tenders, and displacement cruisers are the sweet spot. The motor mounts through the hull below the waterline, so you keep a clean transom and gain back the engine bay. Planing hulls chasing speed are usually better served by other setups — ask us and we'll be straight about it.

Can a pod drive recharge my batteries while I sail?

ePropulsion's Pod Drive Evo models support hydrogeneration — under sail, the freewheeling prop turns the motor into a generator and puts energy back into the bank. If regen matters to your cruising plans, tell us; it changes which pod and battery setup we'd recommend.

How is installation handled?

The pod mounts through a reinforced section of hull with the motor in the water and cabling run to batteries and controls inside. It's well within reach of a capable yard — and simpler than a shaft-drive install since there's no alignment to chase. We're happy to loop your installer into the planning call.

Which battery bank do I need?

It follows the pod: the Evo line runs 48V, the Torqeedo Cruise FP pods run on their matched systems, and the eSSA pods use the G-Series 96V LiFePO4 pack. Capacity then sets your range. We stock lithium packs for every system we sell and will size the bank with you.

Pod drive or electric outboard?

Outboards are simpler to fit, easy to service, and removable; pods are quieter in the cockpit, keep weight low, and leave the transom clean. Budget usually favors the outboard on smaller boats, while dedicated cruisers and sailboats tend to love the pod. It's a lifestyle call as much as a technical one — we'll help you make it.
