Sizing guide

How to choose, in three questions

Chemistry first, then the right line, then capacity.

1

Lithium or lead-acid?

Lithium gives you roughly twice the usable capacity at half the weight, charges faster, and cycles for years — it just costs more upfront and wants a lithium-aware system. AGM and GEL remain great answers for starter banks, backup duty, and budgets that prefer proven simplicity. There's no wrong answer, just trade-offs.

2

Which lithium line?

SuperPack is connect-and-go with the BMS inside. Smart and NG use an external BMS so protection commands your whole system — the choice for MultiPlus-based boats and rigs. NG is the newer generation; Smart remains the natural pick when you're growing an existing Smart bank.

3

How many amp-hours?

Tally a normal day's loads, then size lithium so a typical day uses about half the bank — or lead-acid so it uses about a third, since lead lives longest above 50%. Voltage follows the system: 12V standard, 24V or 48V when currents get big. Send us your loads and we'll size it precisely.

Good to know

Victron battery FAQ

What's the difference between Lithium Smart and Lithium NG?

Both are Victron LiFePO4 banks with Bluetooth cell monitoring and an external BMS. NG is the next generation of the line — including a 51.2V model for 48V systems — and pairs with the VE.Bus BMS V2. If you're starting fresh, NG is the forward path; if you're expanding an existing Smart bank, stay in the family.

What makes a SuperPack 'super'?

Simplicity. The BMS and safety disconnects live inside the case, so it installs like a conventional battery — no external BMS, no control wiring. The NG version adds Bluetooth so you can watch state of charge from your phone. It trades the whole-system control of Smart/NG for plug-and-play ease.

AGM or GEL — which lead-acid do I want?

AGM handles higher charge and discharge currents and suits starter or mixed duty; GEL typically gives more deep-discharge cycles for slow, steady house loads. The Super Cycle AGM splits the difference, shrugging off deep discharges that would tire a standard AGM. Your loads decide — we'll help you match them.

Do Victron lithium batteries need a special charger?

They need lithium-appropriate charge settings, and most modern chargers — certainly every Victron charger we sell — have a LiFePO4 profile built in. The bigger design question is alternator charging and BMS control wiring, which is where a quick consult saves real money and rework.

Why buy Victron batteries from Blue Marine?

Because the warranty lives close to home: we're a True Blue Victron distributor, so support and claims run through our Seattle team — the same people who helped you size the bank in the first place.
