Victron MultiPlus 48/20000 Review: 20,000 Watts From One Box

Victron's MultiPlus has been the quiet workhorse of off-grid and mobile power systems for years — reliable, sensible, humble. This one, not so humble. This week Wesley reviews the new MultiPlus 48/20000/250-100: 20,000 watts of continuous power out of a single box. Not a marketing number with an asterisk — 20 kW of real, usable output. For scale, the previous flagship, the 48/15000, gave you 12,000 watts continuous. This is a 67% jump from one unit.

The numbers

• 20 kW continuous — and it holds real power when things get warm: 18 kW at 40°C (104°F) and 14 kW at 65°C (149°F), with fan-assisted cooling rated for 65°C ambient.
• 25 kW surge for a full minute — enough headroom to swallow the inrush when a big compressor kicks on.
• A 250-amp charger — the biggest in the MultiPlus family, scaled to actually refill the kind of 48V bank a system like this runs on.
• A 100-amp transfer switch with a switchover under 20 milliseconds — your system never notices.
• 96% efficiency, about 176 lb — one box supplying all of it.

Two AC outputs, used the way they're meant to be

Like the rest of the family, the 20K has two AC outputs — and at this scale the second one earns its keep. Critical loads live on AC Out 1 and stay powered on battery; AC Out 2 drops out when shore or generator power disappears. Put the pool pump, the water heater, the nice-to-haves there, and they can't quietly drain your bank in the middle of the night.

PowerAssist is where it gets clever

If your supply is a small 30-amp shore connection or a modest gen-set, the MultiPlus covers the shortfall by pulling from the battery bank in parallel with the incoming supply. Translation for the boating world: your big boat is stuck on a 30-amp pedestal because that's all the marina has — and you're still running the air conditioning or an induction cooktop, loads that have no business working on 30 amps. The bank makes up the difference, and the charger pays it back when the loads drop.

And it scales

On land, stack three into a three-phase system and you're at 60 kW — and you can keep going from there with parallel units, grid-parallel topology with MPPT solar in the mix, and the whole thing monitored on VRM from your phone, anywhere. Bottom line: it drops into a Victron system with all the same features and functionality you already know — VE.Bus, GX devices, the works.

Under the service panel

Wesley opens it up in the video, and credit to Victron's engineers for the packaging. Inside you'll find the familiar MultiPlus layout scaled up: AC In, AC Out 1 and 2, a common ground bus, main lugs for the DC wiring to the battery bank, and the terminal blocks for the usual VE.Bus and accessory connections. If you've wired any MultiPlus, nothing here will surprise you — except the size of the conductors it wants.

The North America question

Here's the honest part: this is a 230V / 50Hz European-standard model with a single-phase output. As-is, it's most at home as a like-for-like replacement on a European-built boat, or in a fully off-grid system designed around it. For US-standard 120/240V split-phase, the path is: configure the MultiPlus for 60 Hz and pair it with a Victron Autotransformer, also set for 60 Hz. The MultiPlus supplies 230V; the autotransformer takes it and delivers usable 120V and 240V. It's a proven topology — but it's a design decision, not an accessory purchase, so run the whole system on paper first. Who this is for

This is not the inverter for a van build — that story got its own upgrade last week with the MultiPlus-II 12/4000. The 20K is for the big end of the spectrum: whole off-grid properties, workshops and pump loads, large European-built yachts, and systems where you'd otherwise be paralleling multiple 15 kVA units. At $2,998.80, replacing a multi-unit bank with one box is a real simplification — fewer failure points, less wiring, one thing to service.
