Victron MultiPlus-II 12/4000 Review: The 12V Power Ceiling Just Moved
For years, every 12-volt MultiPlus-II topped out at 2,400 watts — 3,000 VA. If your rig, boat, or cabin needed more AC power than that, the answer was always the same: step up to a 24V or 48V system, with all the rewiring, DC-DC converters, and cost that comes with it. That ceiling is gone. This week Wes unboxes the new MultiPlus-II 12/4000/160-50 120V — the high-output flagship of the 12V line — and installs it start to finish on our demo wall.
What's actually new
Three numbers separate the 12/4000 from every 12V Multi before it:
- 3,400 watts continuous at 25°C (77°F) — roughly 40% more real-world power than the 12/3000. It still holds 3,100 watts at 40°C (104°F), and it will support its full 4,000-watt capacity for an hour at startup.
- 6,000-watt peak for surge loads — the compressor kick of an air conditioner, a pump start, a microwave's inrush.
- A 160-amp charger — the highest charge current in the entire MultiPlus-II 120V lineup, out-charging even the 5 kVA units. Big alternator-free recharge capability from shore or generator power.
What that gets you in a real build
In practical terms: where the 12/3000 ran one air conditioner, the 12/4000 runs two — or an AC and a microwave at the same time — from a single 12V unit. For a van or Class B rig, that means real summer livability without touching the battery bank's voltage. For a boat, it's the same story in the saloon: more simultaneous AC loads without a system redesign. And for a cabin, it stretches how far a simple 12V architecture can go before a 48V build starts to make sense.
The bigger point is what you get to skip. Until now, outgrowing 3,000 VA on 12V meant either living with the limit or converting the whole system to 24V or 48V. The 12/4000 lets you buy the headroom once, up front — no starting small and upgrading later.
The price math is friendly, too: at $1,105, the 12/4000 runs about $200 more than the 12/3000 — roughly 20% more money for about 40% more power and a third more charging amperage. Everything you already trust carries over
This is still a MultiPlus-II, so nothing about the platform changes: pure sine wave output, dual AC outputs (AC Out 1 is your inverter-backed circuit; AC Out 2 passes through only when shore or generator power is present), a sub-20-millisecond UPS transfer for computers and sensitive electronics, and PowerControl / PowerAssist to boost past a weak pedestal or small generator without tripping its breaker. It stacks up to six units in parallel, does split-phase and three-phase, and is managed the same way as the rest of the family — VE.Bus, a GX communication center, or VictronConnect.
One heads-up from the side-by-side in the video: the 12/4000 is physically larger than the 12/3000 — a proportionate bump, but real. If you're replacing a 12/3000 or specing a tight compartment, check the enclosure dimensions before you commit to the footprint. It's also worth knowing what's coming: Victron has announced a 12/4000 2x120V variant for 120/240V split-phase — the single-box answer for 50-amp pedestals, just like the 12/3000's 2x120 sibling — plus 230V versions for systems abroad.
The install: wiring notes worth stealing
Wes replaces a 12/3000 on our demo wall, and a few habits from the install apply to any Multi:
- Wire gauge comes from the manual, not the last install. Bigger inverter, bigger DC conductors — size the DC and AC wiring to the recommendation for this specific model, and torque the DC posts to the manual's spec.
- The AC output wiring is heavier than the AC input. That's not a mistake — PowerAssist means the output can carry shore power plus inverter power at once, so the output conductors are sized for more current than the input feed.
- The spring-cage AC terminals reward the right screwdriver. Depress the spring, seat the ferrule fully, release, then tug-test. Work left to right: neutral, ground, hot — on AC In, AC Out 1, and AC Out 2 alike (the labels are printed on the board below the blocks).
First configuration in VictronConnect
Initial setup runs through an MK3-USB interface and a laptop running VictronConnect — the dongle-vs-MK3 distinction we covered in Common Victron Questions. Wes's first-power-up checklist: verify the firmware is current under Product info, set the AC input current limit to match what you're actually plugged into, enable the battery monitor (a cheap insurance policy if the BMS connection ever drops), and turn on the lithium battery settings with a fixed charge curve for a LiFePO4 bank. Then dial the charge current to suit your battery — 160 amps is impressive, but your bank's charge rating and your wiring decide the number, not the charger's ceiling. Absorption settings ship with sane defaults; set them to your system before you call it done.
Two normal-behavior notes so you don't panic: the first switchover to incoming AC can take around 30 seconds, and a low-battery light during configuration is common — it clears once you disconnect the MK3 and let the unit get back to work.
Bottom line
More power, faster charging, and more value per dollar than the model below it — without leaving 12 volts.
