2027 Electrical Goals: How to Plan Your Boat or RV Upgrade
Most boat and RV owners think about electrical upgrades reactively — when the batteries die, when the inverter fails, when a trip gets cut short. The end of a year is a natural moment to be proactive: to sit down, think about how you actually use the boat or RV, and build a plan before the season pressure is on.
Start With How You Actually Use the Boat or RV
How long do you typically stay aboard? A weekend warrior who plugs in every Sunday has completely different needs than someone doing two-week coastal cruising legs.
What’s your most constrained resource? Battery capacity? Charging? Shore power reliability? Monitoring?
What did you say “I wish I could…” about this past season? Run the coffee maker without the generator. Leave refrigeration on overnight at anchor. Not worry about whether the batteries would last. These specific frustrations are your actual goals.
What are you planning to do differently next year? More nights at anchor? More offshore passages? Your system should match your plans, not your past habits.
Common Upgrade Goals and What They Actually Require
“I want to stay at anchor for 3+ nights without running the generator.” Requires: enough battery capacity to cover your loads × nights, with safety margin, and enough solar or DC-DC charging to replenish what you use each day.
“I want to run AC appliances without shore power.” Requires: an inverter/charger (MultiPlus-II), a battery bank large enough to supply the AC load for your intended duration, and enough charging to replenish it. Inverter size is driven by your peak load.
“I want to know what my battery is actually doing.” Requires: a properly configured battery monitor (SmartShunt or BMV). Nothing else on this list makes sense without this foundation.
“I want a system that all works together.” Means: Cerbo GX + VRM. All Victron devices talk to the Cerbo, the Cerbo reports to VRM, DVCC keeps all chargers coordinated.
How to Prioritize When You Can’t Do Everything at Once
Fix visibility first. A battery monitor costs $80–120 and gives you the information foundation for every other decision. Without it, you’re guessing.
Fix charging before adding capacity. Batteries that aren’t being charged correctly underperform regardless of size. A charger reconfiguration might recover 20% of a battery’s rated capacity.
Add capacity once you know your load. After a season of monitoring, you know exactly what you’re consuming. Buy the right size bank — not a guess.
Add generation to match the capacity you have. Size the solar after the bank is decided.
Integrate last. A Cerbo GX is most valuable when there are 3–4 Victron devices to integrate. Add the integration layer when the components are in place.
Making It Real: The Off-Season Action Items
January: Do a system audit. Define your 2027 goals in terms of nights at anchor, loads to run, and frustrations to eliminate.
