The 10 Victron Troubleshooting Questions We Hear the Most (and the Quick Fixes)

Is something in your Victron system acting up? Before you decide it's broken, try this. Most of the troubleshooting calls we take at Blue Marine — from rigs, boats, and cabins alike — end the same way: nothing was broken. It was a wire, a setting, or a fuse. This week Wes rounds up the 10 questions we hear the most, each with the quick check you can do yourself. It's the first in a running series, so drop your own question in the video comments and we'll take it up in a future episode.

1. A firmware update failed mid-way

A failed firmware update almost never breaks your device. Stay close to the unit and simply restart the update — it picks up right where it left off. Still stuck? Make sure the VictronConnect app itself is up to date, remove the device from your phone's saved Bluetooth devices, and try a completely different device — another phone, or a laptop.

2. State of charge is wrong or missing

If your battery percentage is off or stuck, it's almost always wiring or a setting, not a bad shunt. Every load and charger must be on the load side of the shunt, with nothing wired straight to the battery. Then fully charge the bank and sync the monitor to 100% when you know it's full. If your battery reports its own state of charge through a Bluetooth app, cross-check that reading and set the percentage directly in the shunt's settings.

3. The Cerbo can't find the SmartShunt

Getting “no battery monitor found”? This is a wired connection, and nine times out of ten it's the VE.Direct cable: check that both ends are fully seated at the Cerbo and the shunt, and swap the cable if one keeps giving you trouble. Then, in the Cerbo's settings, confirm the shunt is actually selected as the system's battery monitor — and update the firmware on both devices.

4. The solar charge controller drops to float too early

Two usual suspects. Your absorption voltage may be set too low, or undersized battery cables are fooling the controller: voltage drop makes it see a higher voltage than the battery really has, so it ends the charge cycle early. Check the wire gauge against spec and double-check that absorption setting.

5. Less solar wattage than you expected

Low solar output is often completely normal — a nearly full battery simply won't accept more power. If the battery is low and charging is still weak, look for shading, dirty panels, and correct array wiring. Handy tip: open the controller's history in VictronConnect to see if and when production actually dropped off.

6. The MultiPlus won't turn on

Start with the basics: check the DC voltage at the terminals and whether the main DC fuse has blown — that's the number-one culprit. Simple but real: check the on/off rocker switch on the unit and on any remote panel like the DMC. And on a lithium bank, confirm the BMS is actually allowing the battery to discharge.

7. VE.Bus error codes

Errors 1, 3, and 4 usually mean a communication issue between products. Use factory-terminated cables — never hand-crimp them; one bad pin throws off the whole system — make sure RJ45 runs are straight-through (not crossover), and on older systems check for corroded connections. Error 11 points at wiring and relays: check your neutral connections and give the system a reboot to clear it. Not sure? Call us and we'll walk you through it.

8. Overloads, or tripping shore power

If the inverter keeps overloading, it's probably a startup surge, not the continuous running watts. If it's dropping your shore power, the input current limit is likely set too high for the pedestal: set the incoming current limit to match what you're actually plugged into and let PowerAssist handle the surges. 9. The DC-DC charger isn't charging

A DC-DC charger like the Orion XS installed with an alternator is designed to charge only when it thinks the engine is on. Check the engine-detection setting, make sure it's wired appropriately for your type of alternator, and set a sensible voltage threshold for it to recognize a running engine — if none of that is configured, it can sit there and do nothing. These are a unique design, so reference the manual: typically the starter battery feeds the DC-DC charger, which feeds the house bank.

10. Charging lithium from an alternator — without cooking it

A lithium bank will pull from your alternator full-on, non-stop, and that can easily overheat an alternator that wasn't built for it. Rule of thumb: keep the DC-DC charger set to about 40–50% of the alternator's rated output, unless it's a true high-output alternator.
