The VE.Can flagship MPPTs — for the largest arrays and multi-controller systems
This is the top of the SmartSolar line: 70, 85, or 100 A of charge current, 150 V or 250 V of PV input, full 12 / 24 / 36 / 48 V support, and — the defining feature — a VE.Can communication port that lets you daisy-chain up to 25 controllers into one synchronised system. If you're building a large off-grid home, a bluewater yacht with a big array, or any system that needs more than one or two MPPTs working as one, this is the range. Bluetooth is built in, and the ultrafast MPPT algorithm runs at up to 98% efficiency on the 150-series, up to 99% on the 250-series.
Who the SmartSolar MPPT VE.Can range is built for
- Large off-grid homes — multi-kW arrays on a 48 V bank, often with two or more controllers synchronised over VE.Can.
- Bluewater and liveaboard yachts — big arch and bimini arrays needing 70–100 A of charge.
- Commercial and professional installs — where VE.Can daisy-chaining and a GX device tie everything into one monitored system.
- Installers and system integrators — remote on/off, a programmable relay, and up to 25 units on one VE.Can bus.
How to read the model number
- First number = max PV input voltage. 150 V or 250 V — the higher ceiling lets you run more panels in series.
- Second number = max charge current. 70, 85, or 100 A into the battery.
Combine those with the maximum PV wattage your system voltage supports to size the controller. Wesley walks through the full math in our MPPT sizing guide.
Why VE.Can?
Every SmartSolar MPPT has VE.Direct and Bluetooth; these models add a VE.Can port. VE.Can lets you daisy-chain up to 25 charge controllers with a single RJ45 cable between each unit and on to a GX device — they synchronise their charge stages and each still reports individually to the GX and the VRM portal. (Over Bluetooth alone, up to 10 units synchronise.) For a single-controller system the non-VE.Can models are fine; choose VE.Can when you're running several MPPTs or want them on the VE.Can backbone alongside the rest of your Victron system. A VE.Can bus needs a 120 Ω terminator at each end — see the accessories below.
Tr or MC4 — which PV connection?
The two versions are electrically identical; they differ only in how the solar wires land:
- Tr (screw terminals). One positive and one negative 35 mm² / AWG 2 screw terminal — you bring your own PV wiring. Best for a combined home-run from a combiner box.
- MC4. Built-in MC4 connectors (two pairs on the 70 A models, three pairs on the 85 and 100 A models; max 30 A per connector). Best for panel strings wired straight to the controller.
Choose your controller
| Model | Max PV input | Charge current | Max PV power 12 / 24 / 36 / 48 V | Max PV short-circuit | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150/70 | 150 V | 70 A | 1,000 / 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 W | 50 A | 3 kg |
| 150/85 | 150 V | 85 A | 1,200 / 2,400 / 3,600 / 4,900 W | 70 A | 4.5 kg |
| 150/100 | 150 V | 100 A | 1,450 / 2,900 / 4,350 / 5,800 W | 70 A | 4.5 kg |
| 250/70 | 250 V | 70 A | 1,000 / 2,000 / 3,000 / 4,000 W | 35 A | 3 kg |
| 250/85 | 250 V | 85 A | 1,200 / 2,400 / 3,600 / 4,900 W | 70 A | 4.5 kg |
| 250/100 | 250 V | 100 A | 1,450 / 2,900 / 4,350 / 5,800 W | 70 A | 4.5 kg |
150 vs 250 = max PV voltage. 70 / 85 / 100 = charge current. 12 / 24 / 48 V is auto-detected; 36 V is selected manually in VictronConnect. The 70 A models use the 3 kg (L) case; the 85 and 100 A models use the larger 4.5 kg (XL) case.
Why this range
- 70–100 A of charge. The headroom for multi-kW arrays — up to 5,800 W of PV on a 48 V bank with the 100 A models.
- VE.Can multi-controller backbone. Daisy-chain up to 25 units for synchronised charging across a large array.
- Up to 98–99% efficiency. Ultrafast MPPT, with advanced detection that locks to the true power peak under partial shading.
- Remote on/off + programmable relay. Tie into a VE.Bus BMS; set the DPST relay to trip on alarms or events (generator start, load shedding).
- Bluetooth built in. Configure and monitor from VictronConnect; external sensing via Smart Battery Sense, BMV-712, or SmartShunt.
- 0 V recovery. Starts charging a bank pulled to zero volts and reconnects a Li-ion battery whose BMS has disconnected.
- Passive cooling, 46-day on-device trends. No fan; a month and a half of history without a GX device.

FAQs
Q: Do I actually need the VE.Can version?
Only if you're running several controllers or want them on the VE.Can backbone. A single MPPT works fine on VE.Direct/Bluetooth alone — in that case the non-VE.Can 150/60–250/70 may save you money. Choose VE.Can for multi-controller synchronisation (up to 25 units) and clean GX integration.
Q: Do I need VE.Can terminators?
Yes. A VE.Can bus must be terminated with a 120 Ω terminator at each end of the chain. The CANUSB ships with a pair; most GX devices and controllers do not — budget for a bag of terminators.
Q: 150 or 250 — which max PV voltage?
Add up the cold-temperature open-circuit voltage of your series string. Stay below 145 V for the 150-series or below 245 V for the 250-series. Higher PV voltage means more panels in series and thinner PV cable on long runs.
Q: Tr or MC4?
Same controller electrically. Tr (screw terminals) for a combined home-run; MC4 to plug panel strings straight in (two pairs on 70 A models, three pairs on 85/100 A; max 30 A per connector).
Q: Can I use it with lithium?
Yes — lithium is one of the eight pre-programmed chemistries. Select the right profile in VictronConnect (Smart Lithium or Lithium NG for Victron banks; follow the maker's voltages for third-party LFP).
Q: Does it have a load output?
No. The large SmartSolar models have no load output — wire loads to the battery (through a BatteryProtect if you want low-voltage disconnect). They do have remote on/off terminals and a programmable relay.
Q: What's the warranty?
5 years from date of purchase, extendable to 10 years for a 10% surcharge applied before the original term expires. Standard Victron limited warranty applies.
