Common Victron Questions, Answered from the Shop Floor
Some questions come through the shop so often we could answer them in our sleep — from rigs mid-build, boats at the dock, and cabins at the end of a long driveway. So this week Wes grabbed the three Victron products those questions usually point at — the MultiPlus-II inverter/charger, the SmartSolar MPPT charge controller, and the SmartShunt battery monitor — and answered the ones we hear most. The pattern he keeps coming back to: it's almost never a dead unit. It's a wire in the wrong port, or a setting in the VictronConnect app.

MultiPlus-II: the inverter/charger questions
“Why can't I program my MultiPlus from the Bluetooth dongle?”
Because that's not what the dongle is for. To actually configure a MultiPlus-II — charge profiles, input limits, the settings that matter — you connect with an MK3-USB interface, the little VE.Bus-to-USB adapter that plugs into the Multi's communication port. The smart dongle is a window, not a keyboard: great for watching the unit, not for setting it up. If you've been fighting the app trying to change settings over Bluetooth, this is why.
“Why won't my Multi talk to my GX device?”
Check which port that RJ45 cable actually landed in — on both ends. The connector looks exactly like Ethernet, and GX devices have network and CAN-bus ports that will happily accept it and do nothing. The cable needs to run from the Multi's VE.Bus port to the VE.Bus port on the GX device. Wes sees this one constantly: five minutes of double-checking ports saves a support call.
“What's the difference between AC Out 1 and AC Out 2?”
AC Out 1 is the real output: anything you want running off the inverter — anytime — wires there. AC Out 2 only goes live when shore power or a generator is present. That makes it the right home for big, non-critical loads like a water heater or air conditioning: they run when you're plugged in, and they physically can't flatten your battery bank at anchor or off-grid. If something “stops working the moment you unplug,” check which output it's wired to — it may be doing exactly what it was told.

SmartSolar MPPT: the solar questions
“Why isn't my controller charging?”
A SmartSolar controller needs panel voltage at least 5 V above battery voltage before it starts charging. Early and late in the day — or under shade — the array may not clear that bar yet, so the controller sits there looking broken while doing exactly what it's designed to do. If it never clears the bar, look at how the panels are wired: series raises voltage, parallel doesn't.
“The sun's up and it's still not charging — now what?”
Work the physical layer. The two classics Wes calls out: swapped PV polarity — positive and negative reversed somewhere between the panels and the controller — and connections that aren't actually tight. Verify polarity with a meter at the controller's PV terminals, then go through every connection point and re-torque. A surprising share of “dead” controllers are one loose screw terminal away from working.
“VictronConnect says PV short — do I need a new controller?”
Probably not. Find and fix the wiring fault first — then, on newer firmware, you can reset the PV-short protection relay right inside VictronConnect instead of replacing hardware or shipping anything back. Update the firmware if you don't see the option.

SmartShunt: the battery-monitor questions
“Why doesn't it see some of my loads?”
Everything — every load and every charger — has to pass through the shunt for the math to work. The rule is simple: nothing lands on the battery's negative terminal except the cable to the shunt. Any wire that sneaks straight to the battery negative is invisible to the monitor, and your state of charge quietly stops meaning anything.
“Why is my state of charge wrong?”
A shunt-based monitor counts amp-hours in and out — it doesn't magically know where 100% is. You have to show it: give the bank a genuinely full charge, then open the SmartShunt's settings in VictronConnect and synchronize to 100%. From there — with battery capacity and the charged-voltage detection set correctly — it re-syncs itself each time the bank reaches full. A monitor that never gets synced (or never sees full) will slowly lose the plot.
