Planning Your Spring Electrical Upgrade: How to Get a Head Start This Winter

Most electrical upgrades happen in the spring — and most of the pain around them comes from people who didn’t plan until spring. Parts with 6-week lead times. Installers who were fully booked in February. Winter is genuinely the best time to plan an upgrade that ships in spring. Here’s how to use the off-season productively.

Step 1: Audit What You Have

Before you plan what you want, document what exists. A system audit doesn’t require an electrician — it just requires time aboard with a notepad.

Battery bank: What’s the chemistry? What’s the rated capacity? How old are the batteries?
Charging: Shore power charger — what amperage, what profile? Is there solar? Is there a DC-DC charger?
Loads: What AC appliances run off an inverter? What DC loads run directly off the battery? Any parasitic draws?
Monitoring: Do you have a battery monitor? Is it configured correctly?
Distribution: Where is the main fuse relative to the battery positive terminal?

The audit gives you a factual baseline and prevents you from designing a $5,000 upgrade around a problem that a $100 charger reconfiguration could solve.

Step 2: Define Your Goals in Terms of Outcomes

Avoid starting with products before you’ve defined what you’re trying to accomplish. Work backwards from outcomes:

“I want to spend 3 nights at anchor without running the generator.” That’s a load-hours-per-day calculation that determines battery capacity and solar array size.

“I want to run the air conditioner off the battery for 2 hours in the afternoon.” That’s a specific AC load that drives inverter sizing.

“I want the whole system to report to one place.” That’s a GX device and VRM architecture decision.

When you walk into a system design conversation with outcomes rather than part numbers, you get a system that actually solves your problem.

Step 3: Get a System Design Done Before Spring

Lead times. Some components — lithium battery banks, larger MultiPlus-II units, Cerbo GX — can have 4–8 week lead times during peak spring ordering season. An order placed in January is in your hands in February. An order placed in April might arrive in June.

Installer availability. Good marine electricians are fully booked by February in most markets. If you want an ABYC-certified installer for spring commissioning, you need to be on their calendar now.

Step 4: Common Upgrade Paths and What to Expect

Battery upgrade (AGM to LiFePO4): Often the highest-impact single upgrade. Plan for new charge controller profiles, potential charger replacement, and a BMS communication interface. Budget: $1,500–5,000+ depending on bank size.

Adding solar: SmartSolar MPPT, 1–4 panels, wiring and mounting hardware. Budget: $800–3,000 installed for most cruisers.

Adding an inverter/charger: The MultiPlus-II replaces your existing shore power charger and adds inverting capability. Requires AC wiring work. Budget: $2,000–5,000 installed depending on size.

Step 5: Order Early, Commission in Spring

Once the design is done and the install is scheduled, place your orders. Parts delivered in winter sit in a box in the garage — that’s fine. Commissioning a new electrical system is best done on a dry, accessible boat, not under deadline pressure during launch week.
