Victron Lithium NG vs. Lithium Smart: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Victron’s Lithium Smart batteries have been a benchmark for marine, RV, and off-grid power systems for years. The Lithium NG is the next generation — same proven LFP cell chemistry, but with a significant list of hardware and communication upgrades. The Lithium Smart: What It Is and Where It Fell Short
The original Victron Smart LiFePO4 batteries earned their reputation for good reason: rugged construction, deep ecosystem integration through VE.Bus and VE.Can, and compatibility with six different standalone BMS units to match a wide range of system architectures.
Two engineering limitations held them back for larger and newer builds:
20-battery bank ceiling. A single system could link a maximum of 20 Lithium Smart batteries together. For large vessels, microgrids, and commercial installations, that ceiling was a hard constraint.
No native 48V option. The Lithium Smart lineup didn’t include a standalone 48V battery. Installers who needed to feed a 48V inverter system had to stack 12V or 24V units in series — which works, but adds wiring complexity and limits configuration flexibility.
What the Lithium NG Adds
Massive Scaling: Up to 50 Batteries, Up to 385 kWh
The NG raises the bank ceiling from 20 to 50 units in parallel and series configurations, enabling total system capacity up to 385 kWh. This makes the NG the required choice for commercial vessels, large shore power systems, and any installation where the Lithium Smart’s 20-unit cap was a constraint.
Native 51.2V Option
The NG introduces a standalone 51.2V battery block — the first in the Victron lithium lineup with a true native 48V form factor. No more stacking 12V units in series to feed a 48V inverter. The 51.2V variant connects directly.
Built-In Internal Shunt
Every Lithium NG battery includes its own integrated hardware shunt. This allows each battery to report individual cell-level voltages and cell-specific temperatures directly over the network — giving the system far more granular diagnostic data than the Lithium Smart provided. When a cell is trending out of balance or running warmer than expected, the system sees it before it becomes a problem.
IP65 Enclosure
The housing has been sealed to IP65 — fully dust-tight and rated for low-pressure water jets. For below-deck marine installations in damp bilge environments, this is a meaningful upgrade over the Lithium Smart’s enclosure.
Updated Mounting Design
The NG’s housing includes a redesigned physical form factor with specialized mounting brackets and heavy-duty battery straps, making secure installation easier in tight spaces and on surfaces where the battery needs to be firmly held in place.
Lower Self-Discharge Rate
Victron optimized the cell circuitry to reduce idle self-discharge. For batteries that sit in storage or on a seasonal boat, this means less charge loss over winter and lower maintenance charging requirements.

How to Choose
Expanding an existing Lithium Smart bank? Stick with the Lithium Smart. Never mix Lithium Smart and Lithium NG batteries within the same bank — the generations are not interchangeable and must always be matched exactly.
Starting a new build? Go with the Lithium NG. The IP65 housing, native 51.2V option, per-battery diagnostics, and expanded bank ceiling are all meaningful improvements. The price difference between the two generations is minimal — on a fresh system, there’s no compelling reason to choose the older platform.
Commercial or large-scale installation? The Lithium NG is the mandatory path. The 50-unit bank threshold is the only way to reach the capacity requirements of commercial vessels and microgrid applications.
Installation tip: Each Lithium NG battery ships with a separate tracking label printed with its unique serial number and vital specs. Stick this label somewhere visible in the power bay during installation — it makes future maintenance, warranty claims, and system documentation significantly easier.
