ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Evo & Plus Explained: Features and Differences
The ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus and Spirit 1.0 Evo are both 1,000-watt electric outboards — quiet, clean alternatives to a 3 horsepower gasoline motor — and at a glance they look nearly identical. The Shared Platform
1,000 watts of output. The equivalent of a 3 HP gasoline outboard in real-world thrust. Well-suited for tenders, dinghies, small fishing boats, and day sailers.
1,276 Wh integrated lithium battery. The snap-on battery unit provides roughly 22 miles of range at a cruising speed of 4.5 mph, or a full day of trolling at lower speeds. The battery is engineered to float — if it’s accidentally dropped overboard during installation or battery swaps, it won’t sink.
Tiller controls. Both motors include electronic instant start, a smooth stepless throttle handle, a magnetic safety kill switch lanyard, and a digital status display showing remaining runtime, live power consumption, and battery percentage.
Flexible charging options. The battery charges via a standard wall outlet, solar panels, or can be bypassed to plug directly into a larger ePropulsion E-Series external battery bank — useful for extended cruising where you want more capacity than the integrated pack provides.

Hydrogeneration (Evo Only)
This is the defining Evo feature for sailboat use. When the boat is under sail at speeds between 6 and 14 knots, the passing water flow spins the propeller backward — and the motor converts to a generator, actively recharging the battery bank while you sail. Free electricity from your boat’s forward motion.
For bluewater cruisers and offshore passagemakers, this meaningfully changes the math on range. Every hour under sail at speed puts charge back into the bank rather than drawing it down.
Remote Helm Steering (Evo Only)
The Plus is tiller-only. The Evo supports remote steering configurations — top-mount or side-mount console throttle controls — making it compatible with boats that have a fixed steering wheel and helm station. If your tender or small powerboat has a console rather than a tiller, the Plus isn’t an option for you.
Wireless Kill Switch (Evo Only)
The Plus uses a standard magnetic clip lanyard attached to the motor head. The Evo adds support for a wireless kill switch wristband: an electronic shutdown triggered the instant the wearer falls overboard, without needing a physical tether. For solo sailing or offshore use, this is a meaningful safety upgrade.
Which One Should You Buy?
Choose the Spirit 1.0 Plus if you’re running a tiller-steered tender or dinghy and don’t need the Evo-specific features. It’s the proven, portable workhorse — great range, simple operation, and everything you need for a standard auxiliary outboard.
Choose the Spirit 1.0 Evo if:
- You sail at speed and want to recover charge under way via hydrogeneration
- Your boat has a helm console and you need remote steering compatibility
- You want the wireless kill switch for solo or offshore use
