Orion XS DC-DC Chargers: Smart, Efficient, and Built for Modern Dual-Battery Systems

The Orion-Tr Smart has been the go-to Victron DC-DC charger for years. The Orion XS is a ground-up redesign that changes a few things fundamentally: it's significantly more efficient, it runs without a fan, and it's the first DC-DC charger in Victron's lineup with a native VE.Direct port — which means it plugs directly into a Cerbo GX. Wesley walks through both models and the full VictronConnect setup in the video above.

What's New in the Orion XS

98.5% efficiency. The Orion-Tr Smart ran at roughly 90–93% efficiency. The Orion XS hits 98.5% — meaning less energy lost as heat for every amp transferred to the house bank. In a vehicle or boat where alternator runtime is your charging window, that difference compounds.

Fully fanless design. No fan means no fan failure, no noise, and no airflow requirement. The Orion XS can be mounted in a sealed engine bay or cramped RV compartment and still deliver full rated output. Heat dissipation happens passively through the chassis.

Native VE.Direct port. This is the biggest functional change. Previous Orion models required Bluetooth for monitoring and didn't integrate directly with GX devices. The Orion XS has a physical VE.Direct port, so it connects to a Cerbo GX via cable — showing up in the VRM dashboard alongside the rest of the system, and participating in DVCC for coordinated charging control.

Alternator protection with precision input limiting. The Orion XS lets you set an exact input current cap, preventing the charger from drawing more than the alternator can safely sustain. It also compensates for voltage drop across long cable runs, ensuring the house bank receives the correct charge voltage regardless of line loss.

The Two Models

Orion XS 12/12-50

Spec Value
Voltage 12V input → 12V output only
Input range 9–17V
Output range 10–17V
Current 1–50A adjustable
Continuous power 700W

The 12/12-50 is purpose-built for 12V systems — alternator to 12V lithium house bank is the core use case. Compact, clean, and sized right for most boats, vans, and RVs running a 12V architecture.

Orion XS 1400

Spec Value
Voltage 12V↔24V, 24V↔12V, or 24V↔24V
Input range 9–35V
Output range 10–35V
Current 1–50A adjustable
Continuous power 1,400W

The XS 1400 doubles the power output and handles cross-voltage configurations. Wesley's pick for most installations: the XS 1400 future-proofs the build. If you ever upgrade your house bank from 12V to 24V, the 1400 adapts. The 12/12-50 doesn't.

Setup in VictronConnect

Step 1 — Pair in VictronConnect. Open the app and find the Orion XS under “Other Devices” at the bottom of the local device list.

Step 2 — Enter the security PIN. The factory PIN is printed on a sticker on the side of the unit and on a card inside the box. Enter it on first connection.

Step 3 — Update firmware immediately. If an exclamation mark appears over the gear icon, install the firmware update before changing any settings. Keep the phone nearby and don't close the app during the flash.

Step 4 — Set operating function. Under Settings, choose Charger mode (multi-stage battery charging) or Power Supply mode (fixed stable voltage for loads). For alternator-to-lithium charging, Charger mode.

Step 5 — Set input and output current limits. Type in the exact amperage cap for both input (to protect the alternator) and output (to stay within the battery's max charge rate). These are independent settings.

Step 6 — Apply battery chemistry preset. Open the battery menu and select the preset matching your house bank: Lithium, AGM, Gel, or Lead-Acid. For lithium, enable the BMS coordination toggle if your system uses DVCC with a communicating BMS.

VRM Integration

Once the Orion XS is connected to a Cerbo GX via VE.Direct, it appears on the VRM dashboard alongside solar production, battery state of charge, and inverter status. From VRM you can:

  • Monitor live charging current and power from anywhere with an internet connection
  • Push firmware updates over the air — no need to be physically present at the unit
  • Enable or disable the charger remotely via the VRM Remote Console

The VRM integration also unlocks a directional logic setting: configure whether the Orion is charging the house bank from the start battery (standard alternator mode) or topping off the start battery from the house bank (house-to-start backup mode). Both directions are supported and switchable.
