Autotransformer. Isolation transformer. Both are transformers, both are boxes with wires coming out of them, and both show up in conversations about boat electrical systems. But they're built differently, they work differently, and they solve entirely different problems. Putting the wrong one in your system — or assuming one does what the other does — is a costly mistake. Wesley covers both devices in the video above.

The Core Electrical Difference

The internal wiring is what separates them:

Autotransformer: Uses a single winding that serves as both input and output. The input and output sides share the same copper — they're electrically connected. This makes autotransformers compact, efficient, and affordable. But because the two sides share the same winding, there is no electrical isolation between them. The input grid and the output loads are connected.

Isolation Transformer: Uses two completely separate windings — a primary and a secondary — wound on the same core but not electrically connected. Power transfers magnetically across the gap between them. The result: complete electrical separation between the shore power grid and your boat's electrical system. What happens on one side cannot directly flow to the other.

That difference in construction is the whole story. An autotransformer can change voltages and balance phases; it cannot isolate. An isolation transformer isolates; it can also do some voltage conversion, but that's not its primary function.

The Victron Isolation Transformer

What It Does

An isolation transformer installed on a boat breaks the direct electrical connection between the shore power grid and the vessel's AC system. Your boat's neutral and ground are referenced only to the transformer's secondary winding — not to the dock's grounding system or the grounding conductors of every other boat on the pedestal.

This solves two distinct problems:

Shore power breaker trips. Modern marinas increasingly install ground fault protection systems (required under NEC 555.35 as of 2026) that are sensitive to even minor leakage current on the shore power ground. Any small fault on your boat's AC system — moisture in a connector, an aging shore cord — can trip the dock breaker repeatedly. With an isolation transformer, your boat's AC system is no longer referenced to the dock ground. The fault current path that triggers the marina's sensors doesn't exist. No more nuisance trips, and significantly reduced exposure to Electric Shock Drowning risk.

Galvanic corrosion. When plugged into shore power, the green safety grounding conductor links your boat electrically to every other vessel on the dock. Low-level DC galvanic currents flow freely through this shared circuit, traveling through seawater between dissimilar metals. Your zinc anodes can't defend against the current flowing in from the boat two slips away. An isolation transformer cuts this path completely — your underwater metals are no longer part of the dock's shared circuit.

Victron's Models

Victron's isolation transformer lineup uses toroidal core construction — quieter and more efficient than traditional laminated cores — with built-in soft-start circuitry. Soft-start ramps up the inrush current gradually when you plug into shore power, preventing the immediate current spike that can trip a pedestal breaker on connection.

50A/120-240V (split-phase) note: Victron does not currently produce a single isolation transformer model rated for a full dual-line 50A split-phase shore connection. Boats on 50A service requiring complete isolation need a configuration designed by a qualified marine electrician.

The Victron Autotransformer

What It Does

The autotransformer is a voltage conversion and phase management device. It doesn't isolate — its single-winding design means the input and output are electrically connected. What it does do is transform voltage up or down, and balance loads across the legs of a split-phase system.

Voltage step-up (120V → 240V): If you're connected to a standard 120V shore or generator source but need to run 240V equipment — a well pump, a large air conditioner, heavy shop equipment — the autotransformer steps the voltage up to supply those loads.

Voltage step-down (240V → 120V): A large generator may output 240V. If your loads are all 120V, the autotransformer steps the generator output down to feed standard household-style circuits safely.

Split-phase leg balancing: On a split-phase 120/240V system (two 120V legs 180° apart), uneven loading between the two legs causes voltage fluctuations and can stress inverters and chargers. The autotransformer actively balances the legs — dynamically redistributing power between them to stabilize the output — before it reaches your inverters and sensitive electronics. This is especially valuable with generator power, which tends to fluctuate more than shore power.

Which One Do You Need?

The key question: Is your problem about electrical separation and corrosion protection, or about voltage and phase management?

If it's the former — a galvanic corrosion problem, a shore power trip problem, an ESD risk — the isolation transformer is the answer. It's the more complete solution for marina-connected boats: it solves the ground fault trip issue and the corrosion issue simultaneously, more thoroughly than a galvanic isolator alone.

If it's the latter — you need a different voltage, or you need to stabilize and balance a split-phase system — the autotransformer is the tool. It's not a corrosion solution at all, but for voltage conversion and phase management it's the right device.

Some installations use both. A boat connected to shore power might have an isolation transformer for galvanic and ESD protection, and an autotransformer downstream to handle voltage conversion or phase balancing for specific loads. They're complementary, not interchangeable.
