Victron Energy Orion XS DC-DC Battery Charger (12V & 24V, 50A & 70A)

The Orion XS is Victron's flagship DC-DC battery charger — engineered from the ground up for dual-battery systems charged from an alternator. It pushes industry-leading 98.5% efficiency and up to 70 A of adjustable charge current, keeping your service bank topped up while protecting the starter battery it draws from. It's the right tool for boats and vehicles with long cable runs or modern smart alternators that don't put out enough voltage to charge a second bank on their own.

Adjustable current and an adaptive 4-stage algorithm

Charge current is adjustable in 0.1 A steps via VictronConnect — up to 50 A on the 12/12-50A and 1400, or 70 A on the 12/12-70A — so you can match the charger to your alternator's capacity and avoid overloading it. The adaptive 4-stage algorithm shortens absorption after a shallow discharge and extends it after a deep one, with fully programmable profiles plus eight pre-programmed battery presets for lead-acid and lithium banks. It can also run as a fixed-voltage DC power supply.

Built for smart alternators (Euro 5 / Euro 6)

An integrated engine-shutdown detection mechanism only activates the charger when the alternator is actually supplying power — so it never drains the starter battery at rest. Low-temperature shutdown protects lithium batteries from charging below safe temperatures, and a configurable input undervoltage lockout stops the charger before it can deep-discharge the source battery.

The most connected DC-DC charger Victron makes

Unlike the Orion-Tr Smart, the Orion XS has the full communication suite: built-in Bluetooth (setup, monitoring, and updates via VictronConnect), VE.Smart Networking (receives voltage, temperature, and current sense data wirelessly from a SmartShunt, BMV, or Smart Battery Sense to optimise charging), and a wired VE.Direct port with DVCC. Connect it to a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX for system-wide monitoring, charge-current limiting, BMS control, and remote access through the VRM portal.

Robust, efficient, and scalable

The 12/12-50A and 1400 cool their aluminium circuit boards without a fan — no moving parts to fail — in a fully sealed IP65 housing. The high-output 12/12-70A adds an external cooling fan to sustain its full 1,000 W: its power electronics stay sealed to IP65, for an overall IP20 rating. All models run full power up to 40 °C (operating range −20 to +60 °C), are protected against overload, short circuit, and over-temperature (graceful power reduction), and an unlimited number of units can be paralleled for more current. A remote on/off input accepts a switch or BMS contact, and DC connections are screw terminals up to 4 AWG (21.2 mm²).

Orion XS 12/12-50A — for 12 V → 12 V systems; input 9–17 V, output 10–17 V, up to 50 A / 700 W; 137 × 123 × 40 mm, 0.33 kg (0.73 lb).

Orion XS 12/12-70A — the highest-output 12 V → 12 V model; input 9–17 V, output 10–17 V, up to 70 A / 1,000 W; IP65-sealed power electronics with external fan cooling (overall IP20); 0.38 kg (0.84 lb).

Orion XS 1400 — flexible for 12 V or 24 V systems; input 9–35 V, output 10–35 V, up to 50 A / 1400 W (at 28 V); 138 × 124 × 53 mm, 0.52 kg (1.14 lb).
