Victron VE.Bus Smart Dongle: What It Does — and What It Doesn't

Some of the most useful Victron accessories are the least glamorous. This week Wes covers one of our favorites: the VE.Bus Smart Dongle, a palm-sized device that plugs into any Victron VE.Bus inverter/charger — MultiPlus, MultiPlus-II, or Quattro — and gives it full Bluetooth monitoring and control in the VictronConnect app. He covers what it does, what it deliberately doesn't, and the five-minute install.

What it does

Plug the dongle into your inverter/charger's VE.Bus port and your phone becomes a remote panel. From VictronConnect you can:

  • Switch the unit between on, charger-only, inverter-only, and off — no crawling to the rocker switch.
  • Dial in the AC input current limit on the spot — exactly what you want when you pull into a campground with a weak pedestal or fire up a small generator, and the classic fix for a shore breaker that keeps tripping.
  • Monitor AC and DC status values, plus device warnings and alarms. Key stats even populate in the VictronConnect device list before you've connected — an instant readout as you walk by.

It also quietly does double duty as a battery voltage and temperature sensor (the optional temp sensor is the same one a BMV-702/712 uses), works with standalone, split-phase, three-phase, and parallel systems, and draws about 1 mA — nothing your bank will notice.

Wes's top use case: an inverter/charger installed somewhere you'd rather not visit — an equipment closet, a van's under-bed bay, a boat's lazarette. If checking on your Multi means moving a mattress, this is the accessory for you.

What it doesn't do (the honest heads-up)

It's not a programming tool. The dongle is monitoring and control only. Actually configuring an inverter/charger — charge profiles, input acceptance, the settings that matter — still requires an MK3-USB interface and a hardwired VictronConnect session. We covered that (and the other config questions we hear weekly) in Common Victron Questions.

It's not VE.Smart Networking. Yes, it's Bluetooth, and yes, it reads battery voltage and temperature — but it does not transmit that data to your other devices over the VE.Smart network. If you were hoping to feed your MPPT a battery-temp signal this way, that's a different tool.

A GX device picks its own sources. If you run a Cerbo GX and your battery data already comes from a smarter source — a Victron Lithium Smart battery, for instance — the GX will use that source, not the dongle's readings. No harm, just don't expect the dongle to win that argument.

The install: about five minutes

In the box: the dongle itself, plus two power leads with ring terminals and ferrules that land in a small terminal block. You'll supply a standard RJ45 cable for the VE.Bus connection.

  1. Mount it near the inverter. Wes drills his into place a cable's reach from the MultiPlus-II.
  2. Run the RJ45 from the dongle to a VE.Bus port on the inverter — the second VE.Bus port is fine.
  3. Land the power leads. Battery posts work; so do the positive and negative bus bars on a Lynx Distributor, which is what we used.
  4. Plug in the terminal block. The blue Bluetooth LED starts flashing immediately — that's power.

First connect in VictronConnect

Find the dongle in the VictronConnect device list and enter the unique Bluetooth PIN from the QR support sticker in the box — file that sticker somewhere you'll find again. As with every Victron device, check Product info first and update the firmware if it's behind. From there the gear icon gets you the two settings that matter: the mode switch (on / charger-only / inverter-only / off) and the AC input 1 current limit.

Worth it?

At $93.50, if your inverter/charger lives anywhere inconvenient — or you regularly juggle marginal shore power and generators — it pays for itself in saved crawling the first season. The VE.Bus Smart Dongle is in stock here.
