Victron MK3-USB Interface: Connection and Configuration Guide
The MK3-USB is a small adapter, but it's the key to accessing the full configuration menu of a Victron MultiPlus or Quattro. If you want to program a lithium charge profile, set an AC input current limit, enable the internal battery monitor, or set up advanced system features — the MK3-USB is how you get there. What the MK3-USB Does
The MK3-USB is a communication bridge between a computer and a Victron VE.Bus inverter/charger. It plugs into the RJ45 VE.Bus port on the MultiPlus or Quattro on one end, and into your laptop or computer via USB on the other.
This was historically a technician tool — used during system commissioning and then put away. Increasingly, boat owners and installers keep one aboard for ongoing configuration changes: adjusting charge parameters for a new battery bank, changing input current limits when connecting to different shore power sources, or updating firmware in the field.
You need an MK3-USB if you're doing any of the following:
- Initial commissioning of a MultiPlus-II or Quattro
- Programming a custom lithium (LiFePO4) charge profile
- Enabling the inverter/charger's internal battery monitor
- Adjusting AC input current limits for different shore power or generator sources
- Setting up ESS (Energy Storage System) or advanced Assistants
It comes in both USB-A and USB-C variants — pick the one that matches your laptop.
Device Compatibility
Mac (macOS): Fully supported. VictronConnect runs natively on macOS and the MK3-USB works without additional drivers.
Windows: Fully supported. VictronConnect for Windows, and VE.Configure for advanced programming.
Android: Compatible with an OTG (On-The-Go) USB adapter. Wesley prefers a laptop screen for configuration work — the extra real estate makes it easier to verify values when programming electrical parameters.
iPhone / iPad: Not compatible. Apple's hardware restrictions on iOS USB ports prevent the MK3-USB from working on iPhones or iPads. A Mac laptop is required for Apple users.
Step-by-Step: Configuring in VictronConnect
Step 1 — Connect and Fetch
Plug the MK3-USB into the computer, then connect the RJ45 end to the VE.Bus port on the MultiPlus or Quattro. Open VictronConnect, hit the refresh button in the device list, and select your VE.Bus device. The app fetches the current configuration from the inverter.
Step 2 — Unlock Settings
Tap the gear icon in the top right. VictronConnect will warn that settings are locked — tap Enable Settings and enter the factory default password: zzz (three lowercase z's). This unlocks the full configuration menu.
Step 3 — Check Firmware
Before changing any settings, tap the three-dot ellipsis menu next to the gear icon and select Product Info. Verify you're on the current firmware version. If an update is available, install it first — firmware updates can change available settings and default values, and you want the most current version before making configuration changes.
Step 4 — Set AC Input Current Limits (General Tab)
Under the General tab, confirm the system frequency matches your grid: 60Hz for North America, 50Hz for most of the rest of the world.
Set the AC Input Current Limit to the maximum amperage of your shore power connection or generator:
- 30A shore pedestal → 30A limit
- 50A shore pedestal → 50A limit (or lower if you want a buffer)
- Generator → set to the generator's rated continuous output
This limit controls how much AC current the MultiPlus draws from the source. The inverter will supplement with battery power if loads exceed this limit — a useful behavior when you're on a limited shore power supply and want to run high-draw appliances without tripping the dock breaker.
Step 5 — Configure the Internal Battery Monitor (General Tab)
If you're using the MultiPlus's built-in battery monitor rather than a dedicated SmartShunt or BMV, enable the Battery Monitor toggle and enter your exact battery bank capacity in amp-hours. This feeds the state-of-charge calculations displayed in VictronConnect and through the GX device.
Note: if you have a SmartShunt or Cerbo GX in the system, those take over battery monitoring via DVCC — you don't need the internal monitor enabled as well.
Step 6 — Set the Charge Profile (Charger Tab)
Navigate to the Charger tab. Confirm Charger Enabled is on, then adjust maximum charging current if your battery bank has a lower charge rate limit than the inverter's output.
Select a battery preset from the dropdown — for LiFePO4, choose the Lithium preset and verify the absorption and float voltages match your battery manufacturer's specifications. The preset is a starting point; always cross-check the voltage values against your battery's documentation before saving.
VictronConnect vs. VE.Configure
VictronConnect handles almost everything most users need: charge profile programming, AC input limits, battery monitor setup, firmware updates, and basic system assistants.
The exception: Complex Assistants (grid-tie, generator management, advanced ESS) and full ESS configuration still require VE.Configure — the legacy Windows-based software. VE.Configure is free to download from Victron's website, but it requires a Windows machine. For anything beyond standard configuration, this is the tool.
The GX Device Shortcut
If your system has a Cerbo GX or other GX device connected to the MultiPlus via VE.Bus, you can configure the inverter through the GX device without physically unplugging cables to connect your laptop directly to the RJ45 port.
In VictronConnect, when connected to the GX device (via Bluetooth, local network, or VRM), the MultiPlus appears as a connected device and can be configured remotely. The MK3-USB isn't needed in this case — the GX device handles the communication tunnel. This is useful when the inverter is in a hard-to-reach location and the Cerbo GX is more accessible.
