The Skylla-IP65 (pronounced “Sila”) is Victron’s heavy-duty shore power charger built for the realities of a marine engine room: salt air, high humidity, and the kind of vibration and splash that would destroy a lesser unit. Built for the Engine Room: IP65 Rating
The defining feature of the Skylla-IP65 is right in the name. IP65 means the enclosure is fully dust-tight and rated for water jets from any direction — the kind of protection you actually need in an engine compartment or below-decks installation where condensation, spray, and heavy humidity are facts of life.
The front panel has a heavy-duty rubber seal behind it, and the chassis is corrosion-resistant. This is laboratory-grade charging intelligence in a package that can take the abuse of a working boat.
The built-in front LCD screen lets you monitor and program the charger locally without connecting to a GX device or phone — useful for standalone installs where you want quick access to the status readout without pulling out a phone.
Two Output Configurations
Both 12V and 24V versions of the Skylla-IP65 come in two distinct wiring configurations:
1+1 Model
Two isolated output terminal blocks. The primary output delivers the full rated current of the charger. The secondary output is current-limited to 3A — it’s designed for a starter battery that just needs a low-amperage trickle charge to stay topped up, not for charging a second large bank.
Best for: boats with one main house bank and a starter battery.
3-Output Model
Three fully isolated output terminal blocks, each capable of delivering the charger’s full rated current simultaneously. All three outputs operate independently, so you can charge multiple large banks at the same rated rate at the same time.
Best for: boats balancing multiple large, independent battery banks.
Universal AC Input
The Skylla-IP65 accepts incoming AC voltage from 90V to 265V at both 50Hz and 60Hz — the full range of shore power you’ll encounter anywhere in the world. A boat plugging into 120V North American shore power works the same as one connecting to 230V European marina power. No switches to flip, no configuration to change. The charger adapts automatically.
Internal Connections
Removing the six front panel screws reveals the wiring bays:
- AC power input — main shore power lines
- DC output terminal blocks — up to three, depending on model
- Voltage/Temperature Sense ports — used to compensate for voltage drop across long wire runs between the charger and the battery bank
- Dual VE.Can ports — for connection to a Cerbo GX or other GX device via RJ45 cable
System Integration
Pairing with a GX Device and Battery Monitor
For full system visibility — and particularly for lithium installations — pair the Skylla-IP65 with a Cerbo GX and a SmartShunt or BMV battery monitor. The SmartShunt provides accurate state-of-charge data, the GX device aggregates everything, and VRM gives you remote monitoring from anywhere with an internet connection. This combination is the right foundation for a managed lithium system where the charger needs to respond to BMS commands via DVCC.
Skylla-i Control Panel
If a Cerbo GX isn’t part of the system, the optional Skylla-i Control panel provides a dedicated remote display and control interface that mounts at the helm or a navigation station. It connects via VE.Can and gives you the same monitoring and programming capability as the front LCD, from a more accessible location.
Power Supply Mode
The Skylla-IP65 can be configured to operate as a fixed-output DC power supply — delivering a stable, regulated DC voltage instead of running a multi-stage charge algorithm. Useful if the batteries are physically removed during storage or if the charger is powering a DC bus directly without a battery buffer in the loop.
Parallel Operation for Higher Current
If your battery bank grows beyond what a single Skylla-IP65 can charge efficiently, multiple units can be wired in parallel. Connect them with standard RJ45 UTP cables via the VE.Can bus and their charge profiles sync automatically — the units coordinate bulk, absorption, and float transitions as if they were a single charger.
