60-day hassle-free returns
The SmartShunt is a full precision battery monitor with no display to mount — your phone is the screen. It does everything a BMV does: measures current through a precision 50 mV shunt, counts coulombs in and out, and reports true state of charge, voltage, current, power, ampere-hours consumed, and time-to-go. You read it all over Bluetooth in the free VictronConnect app, or feed it to a Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX, and the VRM Portal through the VE.Direct port.
Because the electronics are built onto the shunt itself, there is no gauge to find dash space for and far less wiring than a traditional monitor — ideal when you want accurate battery data with minimal clutter.
Who the SmartShunt is for
- Boats and RVs where dash and panel space is tight, or where you simply prefer to check the bank on your phone.
- Off-grid and solar systems that already run a Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX — the SmartShunt feeds accurate SOC to the whole system over VE.Direct.
- Lithium (LiFePO4) upgrades that need trustworthy state-of-charge tracking and an auxiliary input for a temperature sensor.
- Clean, low-clutter installs — one shunt, two thin cables, done.
Why a shunt-based monitor matters
A voltmeter alone cannot tell you how much capacity is left in a battery under load. Voltage sags during discharge, recovers when the load drops, and drifts with temperature and age. The SmartShunt measures actual current through the shunt and counts every amp-hour in and out, then applies Peukert correction and a charge-efficiency factor. The result is a state-of-charge reading you can trust and a live time-to-go estimate.
SmartShunt standard vs. IP65
Two housings, identical electronics and accuracy:
- SmartShunt (IP21) — the standard indoor unit. Ships with two fused (1 A) battery cables for the positive and the auxiliary (starter-battery or midpoint) connection. Use a VE.Direct cable (sold separately) to wire it to a GX device.
- SmartShunt IP65 — water-resistant for engine bays, lazarettes, and other wet or exposed locations. The shunt is fully sealed and includes a 1.5 m VE.Direct socket lead; a standard VE.Direct cable (not included) connects it to a GX.
How it differs from the BMV-712 Smart
The SmartShunt and the BMV-712 Smart share the same internals and precision. The differences:
- The SmartShunt has no display — you read it on your phone or a GX. The BMV-712 comes with a dash-mountable gauge.
- The SmartShunt has no programmable visual/audible alarm and no programmable relay (alarms appear in VictronConnect or on a GX instead).
Choose the SmartShunt if you only ever check the bank on your phone or through a GX. Choose the BMV-712 Smart if you want a glanceable readout at the helm or dash, or you need the on-board relay.
Available sizes
| Model | Stud | Dimensions (h × w × d) | Housing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 A / 50 mV | M8 | 44 × 120 × 44 mm | IP21 |
| 500 A / 50 mV | M10 | 46 × 120 × 54 mm | IP21 |
| 1000 A / 50 mV | M10 | 68 × 168 × 75 mm | IP21 |
| 2000 A / 50 mV | M10 | 68 × 168 × 100 mm | IP21 |
| 300 A / 50 mV IP65 | M8 | 44 × 120 × 38 mm | IP65 |
| 500 A / 50 mV IP65 | M10 | 46 × 120 × 54 mm | IP65 |
| 1000 A / 50 mV IP65 | M10 | 68 × 168 × 75 mm | IP65 |
| 2000 A / 50 mV IP65 | M10 | 68 × 168 × 100 mm | IP65 |
Pick the amperage above your worst-case continuous current. For most boats, RVs, and off-grid cabins the 500 A is the right call; size up to 1000 A or 2000 A for large inverters, thrusters, or windlasses. Not sure? Get a custom quote or call (800) 628-6306.

Pairing the SmartShunt with your system
- Cerbo GX or Ekrano GX — connect over VE.Direct to centralize SOC with your inverter/charger and MPPTs and push it to the VRM Portal.
- Temperature sensor (Victron P/N ASS000100000) — plug into the auxiliary input for temperature-compensated charging and lithium safety.
- Lithium battery banks pair cleanly with the SmartShunt for accurate state of charge.
- VE.Direct Bluetooth Smart dongle — only needed if metal or seawater around the install shortens the built-in Bluetooth range (normally 10–15 m).
Frequently asked questions
Does the SmartShunt need a GX device?
No. It works on its own — read everything over Bluetooth in VictronConnect. A GX device is optional and adds whole-system monitoring and VRM Portal logging through the VE.Direct port.
How do I connect a SmartShunt to a Cerbo GX?
With a VE.Direct cable. The standard SmartShunt has a VE.Direct port; the IP65 ships with a VE.Direct socket lead. In both cases a standard VE.Direct cable to the GX is sold separately.
Which size do I need?
Choose the rating above your worst-case continuous current. 500 A suits most boats, RVs, and cabins; step up for large inverters, bow thrusters, or windlasses. The 300 A is a tidy fit for smaller 12V/24V house banks.
What warranty does the SmartShunt come with?
A 5-year limited warranty from Victron Energy, upgradable to 10 years for an additional 10% of the purchase price. Blue Marine handles the claim process — email support@bluemarine.com.
