Torqeedo Cruise 3.0 R Review: Silent 6HP Electric Outboard

The Torqeedo Cruise 3.0 R is a 48V electric outboard that delivers the push of a 6HP gas motor — 142 lbs of static thrust — without the fuel can, the pull cord, or the winterizing ritual. Wes had one in the shop this week for a walkthrough of the new 48V version. The short version: if your sailboat, launch, or larger tender needs dependable auxiliary power and you are done babying a combustion engine, the Cruise 3.0 R is one of the cleanest ways to get there.

What the Cruise 3.0 R Is

The Cruise line is Torqeedo's family of electric outboards, built in four power classes from roughly 6 up to 25 horsepower equivalent. The 3.0 sits at the entry point of that range: 3,000 watts of output at 48 volts, rated for displacement hulls and sailboats up to 30 feet (about 3 tons). The "R" means remote — it is built to connect to a boat's existing helm and steering linkage, with throttle control at the wheel. A tiller version, the Cruise 3.0 T, covers boats without a helm.

This generation is the meaningful update: the 3.0 moves from 24V to 48V, picking up efficiency and joining the rest of the Cruise lineup on one voltage platform. Same core technology across the family, one battery ecosystem, no orphaned entry model.

Key Features

Real-world thrust, not just horsepower math

The spec is 3,000W — the propulsive equivalent of a 6HP gas outboard — and 142 lbs of static thrust. What that means on the water: enough to push a 20-foot sailboat against tide and wind, and enough control authority to work in and out of a tight marina slip with confidence. Electric torque is instant, so there is no idle to manage and no stall at the worst possible moment.

A built-in GPS computer that answers the range question

Every Cruise motor carries an onboard GPS computer that tracks your speed, battery state, and — the number that actually matters — approximate remaining range for the trip you are on. TorqLink connectivity feeds the TorqView app, so you also get real-time status, location, and historical trip logs on your phone, plus over-the-air software updates. Range anxiety is mostly a guessing problem, and this system removes the guessing.

Saltwater-ready, with a 2-year warranty

The Cruise is built for saltwater service, and the whole lineup is backed by Torqeedo's 2-year warranty. This is a primary-propulsion product from the company that has been doing electric outboards longer than anyone — not a trolling motor asked to do a job it wasn't built for.

A Battery Bank That Scales With You

The Cruise 3.0 R pairs with Torqeedo's Power 48-5000, a 48V lithium battery. Start with one: that is up to 1 hour 40 minutes at full throttle, or all-day range at relaxed displacement speeds. Need more? The system parallels up to 16 batteries. That scaling matters because it changes the buying decision — you can size the bank for how you actually use the boat this season and add capacity later, instead of committing to the worst-case bank on day one.

Remote vs. Tiller

The rule of thumb from the video: if your boat already has a wheel and steering linkage, the 3.0 R drops into the setup you have — throttle at the helm, steering exactly where it has always been. If you steer from the transom today, the 3.0 T tiller version keeps it simple. Same motor, same performance, different control.

Get the Shaft Length Right

The Cruise 3.0 R comes in short shaft (24.6") and long shaft (29.7") configurations, and as Wes puts it, picking between them is one of the most important decisions you will make with any outboard. Measure from the top of your transom to the waterline. Too short and the prop ventilates — noise, cavitation, lost power. Too long and you are dragging gear through the water that slows you down. The Cruise Lineup at a Glance

Cruise motors come in four sizes — 3.0, 6.0, 10.0, and 12.0 — and the number tracks directly with output, from about 6HP equivalent up to about 25. Every size is available in tiller or remote steering, all on the same 48V platform, all with the 2-year warranty. If the 3.0's power class is undersized for your hull, the answer is the same motor family, one or two steps up.

Who It's For

Sailboat auxiliaries are the obvious fit — silence is the whole point of sailing, and the Cruise gets you off the mooring and through the marina without a drone of gas idle behind the cockpit.
