Victron’s digitally integrated LiFePO4 platform. Built to scale — up to 50 batteries on a single bank.
If you’re building a serious lithium system — a bluewater yacht with redundant inverters, an off-grid home running induction cooking, a fleet electrification project — the older Smart Lithium line eventually hits a wall. Wire, fuse, and configure each battery individually. Monitor each one separately. Watch the install drawing grow. The Lithium NG is what Victron built to solve that. Every cell is monitored at the battery itself; every battery in the bank talks to every other battery and to a single system BMS over a high-speed digital bus. Same LiFePO4 chemistry, same long cycle life — dramatically cleaner install, far better scalability.
What lives in the battery, and what you pair with it
The Lithium NG includes an integrated shunt, cell voltage and temperature monitoring, and an automatic cell balancer. Battery voltage, current, temperature, and state-of-charge all stream from the battery to the BMS over a 50 cm M8 digital communication cable. No external battery monitor required — the shunt is inside.
What sits outside the battery is a system BMS, and Victron requires one. The main NG datasheet specifies the Lynx Smart BMS NG (500 A or 1000 A) as the headline pairing. Victron also makes lighter BMS modules for installs that don’t need a contactor:
- Lynx Smart BMS NG. The default pick. 500 A or 1000 A safety contactor disconnects the entire system on alarm and doubles as the main on/off switch. VE.Can communication, NMEA 2000, ATC alternator-temperature mode (no separate alternator protector needed), firmware-updatable. M10 busbars. The right choice for yachts, expedition vehicles, RVs, and any professional install.
- VE.Bus BMS NG. Lighter-weight alternative for 12/24/48 V systems with a MultiPlus, Quattro, or similar VE.Bus inverter/charger plus a GX device. Supports DVCC for system-level coordination, but uses load/charge disconnect outputs rather than a contactor.
- SmallBMS NG. For 12/24/48 V systems without an inverter/charger — lighting, electronics, solar, DC loads. The lightweight pick for vans and small off-grid setups.
Not sure which BMS your install calls for? Email us with your inverter, GX device, and whether you’re running an alternator — we’ll spec it with you in a phone call.
Why teams choose the NG over the older Smart Lithium
- Digital communication between batteries. Up to 50 batteries in parallel on 12 V or 24 V systems (192 kWh and 384 kWh max respectively), or up to 25 batteries on 48 V systems (128 kWh max). The bank acts as a single logical battery to the BMS. Up to 5 BMS units can be paralleled for even larger installations.
- Integrated battery monitor. The shunt is inside the battery. No separate SmartShunt or BMV required for state-of-charge.
- 92% round-trip efficiency. Less energy wasted between charge and discharge than most competitive LFPs.
- Long-haul cycle life. 2,500 cycles to 80% capacity at 80% DoD — or 5,000 cycles if you keep the bank to 50% DoD. Under 1% capacity loss per 100 cycles in lab testing.
- IP65 sealed. Dust-tight and water-jet rated. Suitable for engine compartments, exposed lockers, and outdoor enclosures.
- Repairable. Cover removes with screws — one of the few lithium batteries that isn’t a sealed black box. Service rather than landfill.
- Mounting brackets included. Can be mounted upright or on its side (terminals must not face down). Quick install on flat or angled surfaces.

FAQs
Q: Do I really need a separate BMS? I thought the NG had one built in.
The cell-level protection — balancer, cell voltage and temperature monitoring, state-of-charge calculation — is inside the battery. But the system BMS is what disconnects loads or charge sources during an alarm and what talks to the rest of your Victron stack. Victron explicitly lists the BMS as mandatory and sold separately. The Lynx Smart BMS NG is the default pairing in the Victron datasheet; the VE.Bus BMS NG and SmallBMS NG are lighter alternatives for specific install types.
Q: How many batteries can I parallel?
Up to 50 batteries on 12 V or 24 V systems (a max bank size of 192 kWh and 384 kWh respectively). Up to 25 batteries on 48 V systems (128 kWh max). Up to 5 BMS units can themselves be paralleled for installations beyond a single BMS’s capacity.
Q: What about cold-weather charging? I’m on a boat in the Pacific Northwest.
This is the most important spec to internalize. The Lithium NG charges from +5°C to +50°C (41°F to 122°F). Below 41°F the BMS locks out charging entirely — not a derating, a hard stop. For unheated boats at the dock through a Seattle winter, or any rig that sees freezing nights, you have three options: (1) add battery-compartment heating, (2) choose a heated alternative like the Epoch V2 Elite, or (3) accept that solar and shore charging will only work above 41°F. Email us if you’re planning a four-season install — we’ll spec it correctly.
Q: Can I mix Lithium NG with my existing Smart Lithium batteries?
No. The NG and older Smart Lithium use different BMS architectures and can’t share a bank. If you’re expanding an existing bank, add NG-with-NG. If you’re mid-refit and unsure how to handle the transition, email a tech — we’ll plan the migration with you.
Q: What happens if a cell goes out of spec?
The BMS sees it first. A pre-alarm fires when any cell drops below 3.0 V or rises above 3.6 V. If the condition continues — cell voltage below 2.8 V or out-of-range temperature — the BMS disconnects loads or stops charging via its “load disconnect” and “charge disconnect” outputs (SmallBMS NG, VE.Bus BMS NG) or opens the 500 A/1000 A safety contactor (Lynx Smart BMS NG).
Q: How does the Lynx Smart BMS NG handle my alternator?
ATC mode (Alternator Temperature Control) is built in. The BMS protects your alternator from overheating during high-charge events without needing a separate device. One of the reasons it’s the default pick for cruising sailboats and expedition vehicles with engine charging.
Q: Can I mount the battery on its side?
Yes — but not with the terminals facing down. Upright or on the side with terminals up or out are both fine.
Q: What’s the warranty?
Victron warrants lithium batteries for 3 years from the date of purchase by the original end-user (with a 42-month maximum from the Victron invoice date). This is shorter than Victron’s 5-year warranty on power products like inverters and chargers, and the 10-year extension that’s available on those products does not apply to lithium batteries. Warranty claims require proof of correct battery usage — charge profile, temperature, and depth-of-discharge within spec. Damage from reversed polarity, mechanical shock, liquid contact, lightning, or undertightened terminals is excluded. Full terms: Victron’s 2025 Limited Warranty Policy.
The lithium platform that scales with the install
If you’re building a real lithium system — not dropping a single battery into an existing AGM hole — the NG is the platform Victron designed for it. Modular BMS that fits your architecture. A bank you can extend to 50 batteries over time. One digital bus tying it all together. And it’s a battery you can actually service when something goes wrong, instead of throw out.
